We recently flung open the gates to over 1000 children for profiling exercise. Bethesda is thrilled to have embarked on another profiling exercise that is aimed at giving disadvantaged children the opportunity to go to school. Together, our team was able to touch down at three locations in Matogun, Ogun State, Ikota and Ijaiye-Ojokoro both in Lagos state. Over 1000 children that came into Bethesda schools were screened based on these vulnerability assessments; children engaged in street-hawking during or after school, a child being the breadwinner of the family, living with an aged grandparent, having a chronically ill parent, a street child, a child who has lost one or both parents or living with a caregiver that lacks basic income generation. Watching the face of the vulnerable children we screened alongside those who brought them in, gave us a different mix of feelings and reactions all of which were feelings of pity, sad emotions and the urge to want to help them. It is sad knowing that this year’s profiling exercise only allows us to enroll 300 children out of the 1000 children that came to our gates. By virtue of our focus, Bethesda is about creating an enabling environment for disadvantaged children, we need the support of philanthropists, individuals, and corporate sponsors to help us move these children into school. As a new school year approaches, these vulnerable children are hoping to have a feeling of being just like every other child going to school. What for years was a reminder of the lack they suffer now symbolizes the hope that Bethesda is here to give them a path. The school for them represents more than a place for learning, it is their beginning of the story of fulfilment. It is their story of liberation. HOW TO HELP You can help gift a child the opportunity of going to school by becoming a sponsor.
